Although maybe not the best well known band from the late 80s era, Exeter’s MAD AT THE SUN’s influence on their hometown scene and beyond into the UK punk scene further has rippled through to the present day – had it not been for MAD AT THE SUN and their Hometown Atrocities label and collective, we wouldn’t have one of the best venues in the country in The Cavern Club, and you would not have seen members to go on and be involved with bands such as WORDBUG, ANNALISE, THE ONCE OVER TWICE, CRAZY ARM, DIE KUNST and more!
“Hot Snow Falling” compiles the bands three solitary demo sessions and one live track that up until now were completely unreleased, bar a couple of tracks appearing on comps..it shows a huge influence from the emerging post hardcore Dischord sounds of the likes of FUGAZI. When MAD AT THE SUN split up, the core of the band was to form WORDBUG (Co-incidentally, the “Losing It All” reissue on Boss Tuneage Retro Series is now sold out, but can still be bought digitally) who in turn were to change their name to ANNALISE and finally get some kind of level of recognition that they deserved.. ANNALISE’s “Signposts And Alleyways” was also the whole reason I got inspired to kickstart Boss Tuneage back into life again in 1999 after a four year hiatus…
